Job 3:25

For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.

Exodus 34:21-23

Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock: and it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by: and I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.

THE WORD OF THE LORD

reminiscence

Honor Thy Mother—A Soldier’s Story was written for my brother – Basil ‘Bagga’ Brown.

Nobody compares to him. Growing up, I didn’t have an identity. I was always Bagga’s little sister and it was just fine with me.

Some of my favorite times with Baz (that’s what we called him), were born at Orangefield Primary School. My mother was the principal there and in order to get to school every day, there was a big hill that we had to climb. No car could climb that hill—we definitely had to walk. And so for many years, my Mamma, Baz and I climbed that hill—every day, after Daddy dropped us at the corner. Some momentous things happened to us on our travels on that hill. Like when a bulldog tried to kill my Alsatian puppy, Rex, on our walk down the big hill, through the Orangefield village, to meet my father at the corner. Baz saved my puppy and I can’t remember how, since that attack dog was huge and incredibly scary! But he did—save my puppy!

Then we went to school in Kingston and had to board out. All of our high school years were spent in other places than home. That was tough. But my brother was never far away—he always had my back. Sometimes, all we had was each other—and that was enough.

He was so kind. He’d give you his last penny. It was hard for me to understand how someone could be so giving. Friends and strangers would come banging on his door for help when they were in trouble because they knew he would always help them out.

And, oh how he loved his mother! That was the inspiration for my first novel and the title of the book. It was pure, his dedication to her. Nothing stood in the way of taking care of our Mamma Ruby.

He could have been anything—lawyer, doctor, professor—you name it! But that was not his calling. He was a television icon, a radio personality, a man of the people—that’s what he enjoyed and that’s how he lived. His television program Weh Yuh Seh? captured the hearts and minds of most Jamaicans and I know you miss its ingenuity.

He was excited about my first novel and he was my consultant on the Bob Marley reference in the story.

Baz became sick with cancer in 2002 and I was heartbroken. He battled the disease for about nine years but finally on January 29, 2011, he lost the fight and went home to be with his maker.
